Eastern Ohio ag station celebrating 50 years

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The Eastern Agricultural Research Station in Noble County will celebrate its past, present and future this Sunday. The station, which is part of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, is holding a rededication ceremony and field day in honor of its 50th anniversary. Hours are 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. The station is at 16870 Bond Ridge Road (Township Road 126) near Caldwell, about 2 miles east of Belle Valley and about 100 miles east of Columbus. The rededication program starts at 2 p.m. Afterward, wagons will take attendees on tours of the station’s grounds and facilities.During the tours, experts from OARDC and Ohio State University Extension will talk about the station’s research on grazing and forage management, beef cattle and sheep production, ruminant nutrition, and land reclamation. They’ll cover past successes, current studies as well as new directions. The station was started in 1965 as the Eastern Ohio Resource Development Center, or EORDC. Its first section, Unit 1, included 768 acres. In 1966, its second and final section, Unit II, was created when the Union Carbide Corporation and Baker-Noon Coal Company donated 1,325 acres that had been extensively strip mined for coal.“A lot has changed in agriculture since 1966,” said Ken Scaife, who oversees OARDC’s research stations as assistant to the director of the center’s Wooster campus. “We’re inviting everyone to join us, friends and neighbors of the station and others, as we celebrate 50 years of agricultural progress in Noble County.”For details on the event, contact the station’s manager, Wayne Shriver, at [email protected] or 740-732-2682.last_img read more

Biologicals are here to stay in agriculture, but what are they?

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest It seems there are ever increasing amounts of products for agricultural use that are considered “biologicals” in this rapidly advancing field of research and product development. Biological products can serve as natural pesticides and biostimulants that lead to growth enhancement, disease control, soil health improvement, and plant nutrient uptake enhancement, among numerous other uses.According to R.J. Rant of Nutrilink Biosystems based in Michigan, biologicals are a diverse group of products derived from naturally occurring microorganisms, plant extracts, or other organic matter. They fall into two main categories: microbials (live organisms including bacteria, fungi, nematodes, protozoa and viruses) and biochemicals (naturally occurring compounds including plant and insect growth regulators, organic acids, plant extracts, minerals, and pheromones). Microbials are fairly well understood, but there is still much to learn about biochemicals, Rant said.Biologicals that have been in use for a while in agriculture include: Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), Bacillus subtilis, seaweed extract, humic and fulvic acid, sugar (molasses), compost teas, and fermentation extracts. These have significant value, but also limitations.“With sugars, for example, we get biological stimulation but a little is great and too much is not necessarily a good thing. You have to be careful when you feed sugars to your plant on the soil because you feed everybody and you can get pest and disease issues,” Rant said. “Compost teas are really hard to duplicate and they can be very inconsistent and they are only good for six to 12 hours.”Future agricultural applications of biologicals will include plant growth promoting rhizobacteria that can help control plant pathogens, enhance fertilizer efficiency, and degrade synthetic substances. In addition, biologicals can be used to address different types of resistance of pathogens or insects, Rant said.As with all things, there are benefits and challenges with using biological products in agriculture. As pesticides, for example, biologicals can be very target specific with low impact on non-target organisms, a low risk of resistance and a low environmental impact.“As pesticides are under more scrutiny, these products can be a real fit when or where we lose the use of chemicals,” Rant said. “The great thing about a biologicals is that there is no known resistance because they are such chemically and microbially diverse products.”But, they are typically less effective than their chemical counterparts.“When you are considering any of these biologicals, we feel they have 50% or 60% of the strength as the synthetic chemicals and a lot of growers have mixed results with them. They work in an integrated system. You need to have a good overall nutrition plan with good soil health. Then they can work as well as a lot of the top chemicals, but they can only work if there is good nutrition,” Rant said. “Biological products work best as a systems approach to an overall fertility soil management program. They need good fertility to work their best. And like with any chemical, they are often misused to address the wrong disease on the wrong crop or they are misplaced because people don’t know how to use them.”Even with these shortcomings, Rant sees a very bright and beneficial future with biologicals.“They really fit in down the road with nutrient efficiency utilization, which is a big one considering our phosphorus issues with Lake Erie. They are also really good as resistance management tools to rotate with chemistry to keep resistance management in check,” he said. “They can really stimulate soil biology as we advance into the soil health era of farming, especially where manure application is tricky from a regulatory standpoint. They can help feed the biology of your soil.”A key to effective use of biologicals moving forward will be an understanding of what they can and cannot do.“One problem with biologicals is that some people think that if they use a biological then they don’t need to buy nitrogen or plant protection,” Rant said. “They really aren’t meant to replace your fertility system or reduce your pesticide or fungicide use. They are more to make what you are already doing more efficient. It is usually around a 10% increase in efficiency.”And in this age of increasing regulatory difficulties and costs, biologicals can have ample advantages.“The big thing for companies from a regulatory process is that these are natural products and the burden of regulation is a little easier so these products can get to market and be very cost effective,” Rant said. “That will benefit the company, but also the grower.”As biologicals become better understood, there will be more combinations in the future to address a wide array of challenges in very targeted ways“Combinations can be powerful and you will start to see a lot of companies putting these things together because you get a well rounded product,” Rant said. “We are seeing what they can do for fertility and general disease suppression and biologicals are definitely here to stay.”last_img read more

2 Reasons Why Twitter May Not Be Worth So Much to Google and Microsoft After All

first_imgRelated Posts Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market marshall kirkpatrick Tags:#Analysis#Features#NYT#Real-Time Web#web You want real-time web links? There are probably already more blog posts being pushed out in real time for free consumption using Pubsubhubbub and RSSCloud than there are links shared on Twitter. As we discussed in our recent post Ten Useful Examples of the Real-Time Web in Action, there’s a lot more going on around the web outside of Twitter. Much as we love Twitter, most people suspect its growth is slowing. The rest of the real-time web is believed to be at the beginning of an explosion of growth that will take over the entire internet – eventually almost all information online may be pushed to those who want it, in real time. Why else do we question the value of the full fire hose? Business Insider reports today that Twitter is already selling access to startups for up to $3k per month. It’s hard to know how credible that number is but that’s a really low price. We do know that many startups feel they can get a representative sample of Twitter activity from the company’s free API. Twitter may be having a hard time up-selling to the full feed if what’s already available is good enough and its crown jewels can’t be proven to be that much better. We love Twitter and with some serious clean-up it may provide big search companies a handy little bundle of high-interest links to advertise against. Is it valuable enough for Google and Microsoft to pay big money for, though? We’re not so sure.Come join us and some very smart people from throughout the diverse real-time web industry to discuss this and related topics next week at the Real-Time Web Summit.center_img First, there aren’t really that many links that get passed through Twitter. The service may be the most visible example of real-time communication but there’s a whole lot more going on around the web in real time outside of Twitter. Twitter may see between 3 and 5 million links shared through it each day. Those are heavily biased towards the relatively small number of active content creators on the site and much of it is spam or republished RSS feeds.Almost every real-time search company we’ve spoken to has chosen to supplement the indexing power of Twitter with other, larger data sources. OneRiot, for example, says it collects 4X more links from the click-streams that its toolbar users have opted-in to sharing than it does from Twitter. Faroo and Wowd both rely on P2P clients to power indexing far beyond what they can get from Twitter. Implicit behavior offers a lot more data than explicit behavior.AllVoices uses a whitelist of trusted Twitter users to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and Evri watches trends on Twitter to trigger the building out of their index of the much larger web outside Twitter. Evri also does some really interesting semantic parsing of the contents of those tweets, adding links as pivot points to the news entities people mention in text. Almost all of the companies we talked to had to do extensive text analysis of Tweets and the pages they linked to. That may not be difficult for Google or Microsoft, but is quick discovery of a few million new links a day challenging enough for them to be worth a big price tag? Google and Microsoft are both in talks with Twitter to buy access to the company’s full fire hose of messages and shared links, according to a report this morning from Kara Swisher at AllThingsD. Could these be blockbuster deals that bring the search giants into the world of the real-time web? In fact, the Twitter fire hose may be less valuable than outsiders might think. We’ve been having extensive conversations with a wide variety of real-time web companies in preparation for the Real-Time Web Summit next week and we’re lead to question the value of Twitter links for two reasons. A Production Builder Offers Net-Zero-Energy Homes

first_imgBack in January of this year, during the International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Florida, KB Home unveiled a prototype model, the KB Home GreenHouse, with the following advertising slogan: “An Idea Home Created with Martha Stewart.” Beyond its traditional look and amenities intended to evoke the Martha Stewart style, the builder promoted the home’s main performance feature: net-zero-energy operation.KB Home has since begun incorporating net-zero-energy performance into its production scheme through an initiative called ZeroHouse 2.0. The idea is to combine energy-efficiency measures with a photovoltaic (PV) system. The first ZeroHouse 2.0 models are being rolled out this week in Tampa, Florida, and in San Antonio and Austin, Texas. The company says that the ZeroHome 2.0 option will be introduced in more KB Home communities in 2012.Since the GreenHouse debut, KB Home has edged further into the energy-efficient home market with a commitment to build all its homes to meet the current Energy Star standard. In February, the company announced that it would provide an Energy Performance Guide (EPG) – essentially a “mileage sticker” estimate of monthly energy costs – for each model it offers. EPG energy costs are calculated via the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index, which uses as its reference a comparable home built to the specifications of the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code. Such a home would have a HERS rating of 100, and HERS Index scores below 100 indicate greater energy efficiency.A regional take on ZeroHouseThe ZeroHouse 2.0 model built in the Tampa area earned a HERS rating of -5, meaning its 5.9-kW PV system is expected to generate surplus electricity when the home is in normal use. Whether that actually happens will depend on occupant behavior. The house is cooled by a 19 SEER Carrier heat pump. It also is equipped with a Rainwater Hog modular rainwater collection system, which can be used for landscape irrigation as well as an emergency water supply for the home’s occupants.Bringing a KB Home in the Tampa area to the ZeroHome 2.0 adds about $50,000 to the cost of the house, though the up-charge varies from market to market, company spokeswoman Cara Kane tells GBA. Energy Star-rated homes in the company’s Emerald Oaks subdivision just east of Tampa, range in price from $148,990 for a 1,443-sq.-ft. three-bedroom to $203,990 for a 3,512-sq.-ft. home with three to six bedrooms.last_img read more

PCB unhappy with ICC Task Force recommendations

first_imgThe Pakistan Cricket Board is unhappy with some of the recommendations made by the ICC’s Task Team to reform the sport in the troubled country.PCB chairman Ijaz ButtWell-placed sources told PTI that while the PCB was happy that the ICC task force recognised the need and compulsion for Pakistan and India to resume bilateral ties, it had reservations over some other recommendations in their final report presented to the ICC executive council in Hong Kong.”Making recommendations or suggestions about the quality of cricket balls we use in our domestic cricket or on our selection process are issues that should not concern the task force and purely internal matters of the PCB,” one source said. The PTT has recommended reforms on how the board should be run and on even issues like selection, managerial appointments and use of standard ball in domestic cricket.Among the 63 recommendations listed by the PTT is also one about reducing powers of the Chairman and having a chief executive with more authority. Presently board Chairman Ijaz Butt also holds the post of chief executive as per the PCB constitution.”The PTT was formed in 2009 with focus on security situation on Pakistan after the attack on the Sri Lankan team but their role got more wide ranging and while we respect their recommendations some of them the areas broached upon should be sole responsibility of the PCB,” one source noted. The PTT report has also called for a resumption of cricket ties with India, recognising it to be a key component of the fabric of Pakistan’s cricket.  A PCB official said after Butt returned on July 21 from vacations, the recommendations of the PTT would be reviewed in detail and the PCB would than get back to the ICC with its observations.advertisementBut some of the recommendations are too strong to digest for PCB officials like the one that states: “Perhaps the strongest of the recommendations relate to the governance structures of Pakistan cricket,” the executive summary of the report states.”It is highly unusual that the President of the country is entitled to appoint both the Chairman of the PCB and over half of the Governing Board. It is also inconsistent with the demands of modern sports administration that the Chairman also holds the powers of the CEO.”The PTT believes there should be a wholesale (internal) review of the PCB’s governance structures, including its constitution. While recognising that changes may not happen overnight, the PTT believes that preserving the status quo will constrain the development of Pakistan cricket in the long-term and is not in keeping with international best practice in sports administration.”The report also calls for constitutional changes aimed at reducing the chairman’s powers and making the role a non-executive one. It has also suggested the PCB should only award central contracts to 20 players. With inputs from PTI.last_img read more

Guyanese Pilot Detained in Puerto Rico for US620K Stashed in Private Jet

The airport agents had asked Lall and two other occupants to declare the money they were carrying. Lall was at the time traveling with his father and the pilot of the craft. The pilot declared US$60 while together, the co-pilot and his father produced US$12,000. The hidden cash was found under a row of seats near to the plane’s exit and a suitcase with garbage bags of money was also found near the engine. After the first sum of money was found under the seats, he told the authorities that it was proceeds from his business and he had forgotten that he had it there. The authorities nonetheless continued their search, and found the remainder of cash near the engine. The pilot was then reported as taking full responsibility for the cash. He stated that his father and the pilot had nothing to do with the hidden money. The flight was said to be heading for Georgetown, Guyana.Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ramesh Ghir told Guyana Aviation that the local aviation authorities are “shocked” by the recent developments. Ghir confirmed that Lall is a Guyanese businessman who has a private hangar at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).He said the pilot was given permission some time back to construct the hangar where he is to conduct medical evacuations and other private flights out of Guyana. Lall is said to own two private jets. However, after news of Lall’s detention surfaced, more information surfaced that the pilot was given special privileges at CJIA where he was allowed to forgo necessary customs and immigration among other security checks. Ghir and Minister of Transport, Robeson Benn both dismissed the claims declaring that all persons using the airport facilities have to go through the mandatory security procedures. The facility is however located some distance away from CJIA’s arrival and departure building. The private hangar is very secluded. One has to turn right off the main road, to the southern end on the CJIA tarmac onto ‘Khali Road.’ This then takes you to the only building in that location of the airport. There is a private security hut ahead of the hangar’s main building. No airport security is visible in this location.Airport staffers told Guyana Aviation that because of the location, one can access the facility without authorities or anyone else ever knowing. This they say can be dangerous in terms of security, “while you may never know what kind of business is going on at the back there.”It was stated also that Head of State Donald Ramotar would have traveled a few times on state business with the private jet. The bigger question asked was whether the flight was paid for with state funds or not. Benn opined that the flights could not have been free. When asked, Ghir hinted to Guyana Aviation that it would not have been possible for the jet to smuggle money into or out of the country since it would have gone through the relevant security checks. The hangar is expected however to provide arrival and departure areas, executive lounges and spaces for customs and immigration agents among other facilities. The high-end clients will not have to go through the airport’s main arrival and departure facilities.Currently, the private hangar is incomplete, Benn said. Much of the furnishings and internal work is to be concluded.Lall who is said to have several other business ventures in Guyana, is expected to attend a bail hearing in Puerto Rico next week.
