Eric Gayner Dear Editor: Marijuana should be legalized throughout the entire United States. The legalization of marijuana will benefit society in several ways. First, by taxing marijuana sales and imports, states will see increased revenue. Second, by not having to prosecute and jail lower level marijuana offenders, states will save money. Third, legalizing marijuana will create jobs.Many people already pay for and smoke marijuana illegally, but if legalized, they can continue to do business and the government can tax it. According to Debra Borchardt, writer for Forbes Magazine, “States are addicted to cannabis tax revenues. According to a new report from New Frontier Data states with legalized marijuana are on track to generate approximately $655 million in state taxes on retail sales in 2017. Within that tax figure, $559 million will come just from cannabis taxes, much more than from alcohol taxes.”States that have legalized marijuana are making over half a billion dollars on cannabis taxes, while alcohol taxes are making a lot less money. For example: in the Colorado Department of Revenue reported that the revenue Colorado made from taxing and licensing marijuana sales hit a high in 2017 of $247,368,473. 2018 has a projected revenue of $346,541,052 . Furthermore, in 2017, taxes on alcoholic beverages in Colorado were about $150,669,971; almost half that of marijuana tax. Not only could states make money, but the states’ tax payers could save money.Ray Stern, from Phoenix New Times stated, “Legalizing up to an ounce of marijuana in Arizona could save taxpayers at least $1.3 million in jail booking costs alone.” Governments need tax money to run. Saving states over a million dollars in prosecuting marijuana offenders will go a long way in helping the economy. Not only are we saving money by not prosecuting and jailing drug dealers, buyers and users, but an author from The Guardian said, “Whenever there is a medical marijuana law, we observe that crime at the border decreases because suddenly there is a lot less smuggling and a lot less violence associated with that.”By legalizing marijuana, the opening of new stores/dispensaries will create new jobs. The marijuana industry needs growers, warehouse space, specialty lighting, irrigation equipment, contractors, lawyers, and bookkeepers, etc. Christopher Ingraham from The Washington Post claimed that, “In 2015, the legal marijuana industry in Colorado created more than 18,000 new full-time jobs and generated $2.4 billion in economic activity…” Marijuana created 18,000 full-time jobs in one state. If it was legal in every state, there could be 900,000 new full-time jobs made in the United States alone.Marijuana should be legalized throughout the entire United States. Indianapolis, In. — The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) is working with local health departments in southern Indiana to respond to a recent increase in hepatitis A cases, many of which are tied to a large outbreak in Kentucky.In the last month, 17 cases of hepatitis A have been confirmed statewide, including 11 in Clark and Floyd counties. Since Jan. 1, ISDH has confirmed 40 cases of hepatitis A statewide. Typically, fewer than 20 cases are confirmed each year in Indiana.Many of the southern Indiana cases have involved inmates in the Clark County Jail. However, an elementary school in Clark County and a Bob Evans restaurant on State Street in New Albany also have been impacted.“Hepatitis A is a highly contagious virus, and seeing this many cases in such a short timeframe is concerning,” said State Health Commissioner Kris Box, MD, FACOG. “We are working closely with our local partners to identify individuals who may have been exposed and to halt the transmission of disease.”Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver. It is generally transmitted via fecal-oral routes or through consumption of contaminated food or water. Individuals can contract the virus through contact with:Foods prepared or served by an infected person(s)Stool or blood of an infected person(s)Inanimate objects that may have trace amounts of fecal material from hand contactShared syringes or “works” used to inject drugsSymptoms vary greatly, from severe to none at all, and may include loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, fever, stomach ache, dark (cola) colored urine and light colored stools. Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or skin) may appear a few days after the onset of these symptoms. Individuals can become ill 15 to 50 days after being exposed to the virus. Most people who get hepatitis A feel sick for several weeks, but they usually recover completely and do not have lasting liver damage. However, hospitalization and, in rare cases, death can occur.Anyone who is exhibiting symptoms of hepatitis A should contact a healthcare provider immediately. Individuals with symptoms should not prepare or serve food to others and should wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after eating and after restroom use. Food handlers in schools, hospitals, restaurants and other facilities that serve large numbers of people are encouraged to get vaccinated, which is the best way to prevent hepatitis A.Since 2014, Indiana has required that children be vaccinated for hepatitis A prior to the start of the school year. Therefore, children in kindergarten through grade 3 have likely been immunized against the disease. A group of protestors have taken to the street in Buncrana today to highlight their urgent fears over the telecommunications mast at Buncrana Garda Station.The Buncrana Garda Mast Action Group and 5G Inishowen Awareness group are demanding that a new 3G and 4G wireless antenna at the town’s Garda Station is not turned on.Campaigners say they received information that suggests the mast will be activated today (Monday). Protesters gathered with signs outside Buncrana Garda Station this morning as they call for developments to be moved to isolated areas of the county. 11 January 2012 Over 100 000 new jobs were created in South Africa in December 2011, with temporary work growing the fastest, according to the latest Adcorp Employment Index.“A total of 103 327 new jobs were created in December 2011 – the fastest rate of growth in nine months,” Adcorp said in a statement on Tuesday.All employment categories reported growth in December, with the fastest being temporary work (15 percent) and permanent jobs (six percent), said Adcorp labour market analyst Loane Sharp.He said labour agency work lagged behind with a growth rate of five percent, “possibly reflecting regulative and regulatory uncertainties regarding labour broking”.However, the number of jobs in South Africa was still 850 000 below the peak reached before the 2009 global recession.The country had lost 1.56-million permanent jobs and created 0.71-million temporary jobs since then, Sharp said.In December, the distribution and logistics sector grew significantly at 16 percent, as did the financial services (nine percent) and retail (eight percent) sectors.The index found that no sectors had reported a decline in employment.Job growth was fastest in the low-skilled and semi-skilled job categories.Services workers grew at a rate of 11 percent, clerks at 10 percent and elementary occupations at eight percent.“This is the first time since the 2009 recession that employment growth has been observed in the entry-level occupations,” Sharp said.Sapa
14 June 2012 Three young people from Soweto in the south of Johannesburg have begun an enterprising journey to uplift and inspire the young people of South Africa, in memory of late student activist Hector Pieterson. Sina Molefi, a half-sister to Pieterson, together with Zuza Mbatha and Tera Gaju, call themselves “activists of Hector Pieterson”, and say they are not out to exploit his name for money, but to use it to make a creative impact on the youth of South Africa whilst creating a legacy for his family. The three started a fashion label in 2007 – which they named after Pieterson – under Abasha Innovations – a closed corporation company they run jointly. They used the brand to commemorate not only the now world-famous teenager, but also all the other victims of the fateful day of 16 June, 1976 – the beginning of the Soweto uprising. Abasha is an isiZulu word that means “young people”. Since its establishment, the aim of the brand has been to preserve the valuable contribution of the youth of South Africa through fashion. Some of the items currently available include accessories like caps and handbags, while they also have ranges in T-shirts, skirts, dresses and suits. The trio’s clothes were initially sold at independent retail stores like the Y Shop in Rosebank and Cyberzone at the Carlton Centre in the Johannesburg city centre, but the team decided to expand and make it available through other channels. And so with their collective vision they began with plans to open a clothing store, which they hope will take his legacy to new heights. The store, expected to open in August, will be located outside the Hector Pieterson Museum in Orlando West. Their immediate plan is a modest one that involves operating the business out of a shipping container to start with, with the hope of venturing into a larger, more conducive space in future. One of the most immediate challenges for the team is securing sponsors for the store. Another idea they had was to get an advertiser to use the container space for exposure of their brand, which would in turn help them finance the day-to-day running of the store. But even that is proving to be a struggle. Once the store is up and running, the items sold will be directly available to their target market, young people in Soweto as well as to visitors to the memorial site. Fashion meets history The fashion identity of the “Hector Pieterson” label is a combination of South African township trends and urban styles, and was started with the hope that it will mean something to young people. “If young people and maybe even adults are wearing the clothes, they will help keep the memory alive,” says Mbatha. He hopes the story of 1976 is alive every day and inspiring change in the youth. Molefi, who is the creative director for the label, is responsible for the designs. She studied fashion design at Parktown College. Mbatha, who has also worked with well-known fashion label Loxion Kulca, manages the operations of Abasha, while the sales and marketing responsibilities of the label lie with Gaju.The Hector Pieterson Foundation The team at Abasha have not left their plans to inspire change entirely up to the success of the store. The company has also signed a binding agreement with the Hector Pieterson Foundation to further help support and empower young people. All profits from the label will go towards the foundation, which was started by Hector’s mother Dorothy and another sister Antoinette Sithole. The foundation’s work focuses on rehabilitating young people from broken families as well as orphans, and inspired by the childhood story of Dorothy, who herself was an orphaned at the age of 10. “The idea behind the foundation is to keep the memory and legacy of Hector Pieterson for generations to come,” says Sithole. The Abasha team hope this process will assist youth projects in previously disadvantaged communities. “Our mission is to uplift youth who are involved in different projects and initiatives so that they can inspire change,” says Mbatha, whose vision for the brand has not changed since its inception. “The youth must come up with their own ideas to create jobs, not just to make money.”The brand’s vision The Hector Pieterson brand will not be confined to South Africa only. Once the label becomes successful locally, Abasha plans to market it overseas and make it available for online purchase as well. “The struggle of apartheid is understood by people around the world and is recognised globally, as there are countries who have overcome similar trials and struggles for freedom,” says Mbatha. He also makes it clear that the label is not meant to be associated with June 16, 1976 or youth month for that matter. “The store will be an on-going, independent commitment to uplift the youth,” he says. “It will be a reminder to all South Africans of the sacrifices that were made for them to enjoy their democracy.” If all goes well with the store and the foundation, Abasha hopes to expand their operations towards designing school uniforms as well. All sales of uniforms made from schools that buy from them will be generously matched by Abasha in the form of donations to disadvantaged schools. “If, for instance, we make a sale of 20 000 school trousers, we will donate another 20 000 school trousers to a school in need of them,” says Mbatha.Support from South Africa The Hector Pieterson fashion brand will showcase its newest items of fashion and accessories at this year’s South African Fashion Week from 30 August to 2 September. Items from the store can also be purchased during the event at the pop-up store at Sandton City. Clothes from the label will also feature on the big screen. Veteran director Faith Isiakpere, a former senior producer at the BBC and filmmaker, approached Abasha last year to provide some of the wardrobe for her upcoming musical Cry for Love, a film inspired by the 2008 xenophobic attacks in South Africa. The clothes can be seen worn by well-renowned local artist Yvonne Chaka Chaka and actor Leleti Khumalo in the film. Logically, it makes sense: If you make your music available to stream for free, people are less likely to buy it.Right? Not always.Ahead of its release on March 19, Justin Timberlake’s new album The 20/20 Experiencewas streaming in its entirety not just on Spotify and Rdio, but at the iTunes store itself. Anybody who wanted to could quickly and legally access the album for a week. Then it was released. And it became the most pre-ordered album in iTunes history, surging past his record label’s sales expectations by 63%. It’s good news not just for Timberlake himself, but for the music subscription model that he plans to embrace when MySpace — of which he is part owner — launches its own service later this year. MySpace will join Google, Amazon, Beats and God knows who else in entering the digital music subscription market in 2013. Timberlake’s experience would seem to debunk the thesis that streaming can’t support artists and thus isn’t in their best interests. Indeed, his success will likely make him a poster child for the music subscription revolution as the industry marches toward a future in which music is rented more than it’s owned. Music Subscription Services: Not a Silver BulletBut hold on a second. For one thing, we’re not all Justin Timberlake. The pop megastar released his first solo album over a decade ago, after years of global success as a member of a massively popular boy band. In the same way that Radiohead’s 2007 experiment in “pay-what-you-want” record sales didn’t create a new model that worked for everybody, artists can’t necessarily look to Timberlake for cues about where their careers might be headed. It’s also worth noting that streaming alone wasn’t enough to constitute “success” in this case: Selling individual copies is still the ticket to revenue and publicity for artists. Timberlake’s new album quickly became one of the most streamed records on Spotify, but that’s not what everybody’s talking about. It’s the sales numbers. That’s where the lion’s share of the revenue for this record is going to come from. What The 20/20 Experience launch does show is that subscription services, while not ready to replace paid downloads as a revenue stream for the industry, can be a critical tool for marketing and ultimately driving sales. In time, the revenue available to streaming services may reach more sustainable levels. In the meantime, it’s nice to know the artists who embrace them aren’t shooting themselves in the foot by doing so. Streaming may have promise, but it’s no silver bullet. The music market’s digital future is going to be a hybrid of approaches, some of which will work better than others in particular circumstances. Navy nearly killed the Ohio State-USC hype before the week began. A two-point conversion separated the Midshipmen and Buckeyes with two minutes remaining, but it was OSU that came away with those coveted points en route to a nerve-racking 31-27 victory before an opening-day record 105,092 fans at Ohio Stadium.With OSU leading 29-27, linebacker Brian Rolle intercepted Ricky Dobbs’ pass and returned it the length of the field for two points, as the stunned crowd let out a collective sigh of relief. A Navy conversion would have tied the game, an almost unthinkable turn of events after the Midshipmen trailed by 15 midway through the fourth quarter.“We were nervous for maybe a second,” Rolle admitted. “Then we realized there was no reason to panic now. We knew we just needed to step up and make a play.”Dobbs, a junior quarterback who set career highs with eight completions for 156 yards, said that Rolle’s pick, coupled with an earlier interception by Kurt Coleman, spelled doom for Navy.“I tried to squeeze it in there by throwing it low, but [Rolle] just made a great break on it,” Dobbs said. “I take full responsibility for this one. We have no chance to win with turnovers.”The Buckeyes didn’t allow Navy to make things interesting until the fourth quarter. Leading 29-14, coach Jim Tressel elected to send out his offense instead of kicking a field goal on fourth down.
