first_imgAs The Great Gatsby hits the cinemas, the 1920s are roaring into fashion. From Paris to New York, we presents five places to party like you’re Jay, Jordan, Nick, Tom and Daisy. Bottoms up!1. New York, USAF. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel The Great Gatsby – now receiving the Baz Luhrmann treatment – captured the cocktail-soaked mood of the 1920s (actually, The Beautiful and Damned is better, but we digress). Hire a beachhouse in Long Island for the season and throw outlandish parties like mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby or, more realistically, prop up the bar with a Tom Collins at Dutch Kills in Queen’s, New York.2. Paris, FranceIn Woody Allen’s Oscar-winning Midnight in Paris, Owen Wilson goes back in time to the 1920s and parties with the stars of the Lost Generation like Cole Porter, Picasso, Ernest Hemingway and literary power couple F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. What we’d give to party with Owen Wilson, but anyway, if he’s not available, don your best cloche hat, pose at the bar like Coco Chanel, sinking absinthes and smoking Gitanes in a seven inch-long holder (ok, maybe not).3. Pamplona, SpainF. Scott Fitzgerald’s drinking buddy, Ernest Hemingway, wrote another absolute classic of the age. In Fiesta (The Sun Also Rises), expat Yank Jake Barnes parties hard in Paris with his posse before heading to Pamplona to er, party hard. Live it up like Jake, Lady Brett and the gang at the San Fermin fiesta in July, when the baking Basque city kicks off big style. Expect much wine-induced craziness, and the famous Running of the Bulls. Chill out afters in Biarritz or San Sebastian.4. Atlantic City, USASteve Buscemi’s bootlegger Nucky Thompson lords it ever-so-stylishly over prohibition-era Atlantic City in the massive TV series Boardwalk Empire. ‘AC’ has changed a bit since the 1920s, but the seaside boardwalk is still there by the beach, while you can certainly sip a Canadian Club by the craps clad in top hat and carnation in one of AC’s many, many casinos.5. Nice, FranceTake a summer sojourn to the French Riviera like F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age jet set in Tender is the Night. Even if the budget doesn’t stretch to a hydroplane and a nine-bedroomed villa in Cassis, you can still do it like Dick Diver and Nicole. Book a cheap break in Nice, don tux/flapper and blow your entire budget on a kir royale and a round of roulette at the Palais de la Méditerranée.
